Buy vs Sell Exchange Rates Explained for Travelers

Understand “we buy” and “we sell” before comparing a currency exchange board in Phu Quoc.

Buy vs Sell Exchange Rates Explained for Travelers
Guide topicbuy vs sell exchange rate

“We Buy” and “We Sell” can look confusing because the labels are written from the exchange service’s point of view. Once you know whose currency is being bought, the table becomes much easier to read.

If you bring foreign cash and want VND: you are selling the foreign currency to the exchange service, so the relevant figure is normally the service’s We Buy rate for that currency. If you are buying foreign cash with VND, the We Sell side is normally relevant.

Read the rate from the service’s perspective

Suppose you arrive with US dollars and want Vietnamese Dong. The counter is buying your USD from you. That is why you look at the USD “We Buy” rate. The same logic applies to EUR, KRW, AUD and other supported foreign currencies.

If you are doing the opposite and using VND to obtain foreign currency, the counter is selling that foreign currency to you, so you look at “We Sell.”

Why buy and sell rates are different

An exchange service normally has a difference between the price at which it buys a currency and the price at which it sells that currency. This difference is often called the spread. The spread is not automatically the same thing as a separate commission or service fee.

For a fair comparison, ask whether any additional fee applies and compare the final amount of VND you will actually receive.

A simple example without using a live rate

If a hypothetical USD buy rate were 25,000 VND for 1 USD, then 100 USD would correspond to 2,500,000 VND before any applicable fee or banknote adjustment. This example only demonstrates the calculation; it is not a current exchange quote.

The real transaction should use the current published rate and the banknotes accepted at the time of exchange.

Why a headline rate can be misleading by itself

Two services can advertise similar-looking rates while producing different final results because of fees, note-condition rules or the exact rate that applies to your denomination. Always compare the final VND amount for the amount you intend to exchange.

Rate timestamps matter

Currency rates change. A screenshot from yesterday, a cached search result or a travel forum post can be outdated. Use the latest timestamp on the rate page and confirm a larger transaction before traveling to a counter.

Banknotes can still affect acceptance

A published currency rate does not guarantee that every damaged, marked, old-series or unusual banknote will be accepted. If you are unsure about the notes you hold, use the banknote preparation checklist and ask before visiting.

Rate-reading checklist

  • Identify which currency you are giving.
  • Identify which currency you want to receive.
  • Use “We Buy” when the service is buying your foreign cash.
  • Ask whether a separate fee applies.
  • Compare the final VND amount, not only the headline number.
  • Check the timestamp.
  • Confirm larger transactions in advance.

How to verify: Vietnam Tourism’s official currency guide identifies VND as Vietnam’s official currency and explains that travelers commonly use a mix of cash, cards and ATMs. Payment acceptance and ATM conditions change, so check your card issuer, the ATM operator and the current service details before acting.
