Travelers often see a difference between a currency exchange service’s buy and sell rates and assume that difference is the same thing as a commission. They are related to the total cost of a transaction, but they are not automatically the same charge.
Quick answer: the spread is the difference between the service’s buy and sell prices. A fee or commission is a separate charge if one applies. Compare the final VND amount for the same currency, amount and banknote condition.

Spread and separate fee are different things
An exchange service can publish one rate for buying foreign cash and another rate for selling it. The difference between those two quoted prices is commonly called the spread. A separate fee or commission is an additional charge disclosed outside the quoted exchange rate if one applies.

Hypothetical comparison: a better headline rate can still pay less
The numbers below are deliberately hypothetical. They demonstrate the comparison method and are not current exchange quotes.
Quote A
- Amount: 100 USD
- We Buy rate: 25,000 VND/USD
- Separate fee: 0 VND
Final VND = 100 × 25,000 − 0 = 2,500,000 VND.
Quote B
- Amount: 100 USD
- We Buy rate: 25,150 VND/USD
- Separate fee: 30,000 VND
Final VND = 100 × 25,150 − 30,000 = 2,485,000 VND.
In this example, Quote B has the stronger headline buy rate but the lower final payout after the separate fee. That is why the final VND amount is the useful comparison point.
A simple final-amount formula
Final VND = foreign-currency amount × applicable We Buy rate − separate fee or adjustment, if any.
Before applying the formula, make sure you are comparing the same currency, same transaction direction and same banknote condition.
Spread vs commission vs ATM surcharge vs DCC markup
- Spread: difference between quoted buy and sell prices.
- Commission or service fee: a separate charge if one applies to the cash exchange.
- ATM operator surcharge: a fee charged by an ATM operator for a withdrawal; it is not a cash-exchange spread.
- DCC markup: a currency-conversion markup or fee associated with Dynamic Currency Conversion at a card terminal or ATM.

Banknote condition is another separate variable
A published buy rate does not prove that every physical note will be processed in the same way. Old series, damaged, marked or unusual notes can require additional review. Treat a banknote-specific adjustment as a transaction condition, not as proof of a general fee policy.

Reference rates are context, not a cash quote
Official reference rates can help explain market context, but they are not necessarily executable retail cash rates. The European Central Bank states that its euro foreign-exchange reference rates are published for information purposes rather than as transaction rates.

How to ask for a complete quote
- State the foreign currency and amount you are giving.
- Confirm which We Buy rate applies.
- Ask whether any separate fee or commission applies.
- Confirm whether your banknote denomination, series and condition are acceptable.
- Ask for the final VND amount before completing the transaction.
- Check the rate timestamp if the quote came from a website.
