What to Do With Leftover Vietnamese Dong Before Leaving Phu Quoc

What should you do with leftover Vietnamese Dong before leaving Phu Quoc? Compare spending, keeping VND and asking about exchange-back options.

Vietnamese Dong cash planning before departure from Phu Quoc

Leftover Vietnamese Dong is a normal end-of-trip problem. The best solution depends on how much VND you still have, which final expenses remain, whether you expect to return to Vietnam and whether an appropriate provider can legally offer the exchange-back transaction you want.

Quick answer: first keep enough VND for your final transport, meals and other legitimate cash expenses. For a modest remainder, you can spend it or keep it for a future Vietnam trip. If you want to convert VND back into foreign currency, do not assume every town exchange counter can do that transaction — ask a bank or appropriate provider what is currently available and what documents or receipts are required.

Step 1: calculate your final cash needs before doing anything

Before another withdrawal, exchange or last-minute purchase, list the cash expenses that remain. Typical examples include transport to the airport, meals, small shopping, tips you personally choose to give and any unpaid activity.

If your remaining VND already covers those costs, avoid creating a larger leftover balance by making another unnecessary cash transaction. The How Much Cash Should You Carry in Phu Quoc? guide explains why the cash target should decrease as departure approaches.

Option 1: use a modest remainder for final purchases

If the amount is small, the simplest option may be to use it for legitimate final expenses rather than searching for another exchange transaction. Pay attention to the denominations and count change as usual.

The Vietnamese Dong Guide covers note recognition, zeros, working cash and end-of-trip planning.

Option 2: keep VND for a future Vietnam trip

If you expect to return to Vietnam and are comfortable storing the notes securely, keeping a modest amount can remove some arrival friction next time. Store the notes flat, dry and in a place where they will not be damaged.

Before a future trip, check whether the notes you kept are still current and familiarise yourself with any changes in local payment practices.

Option 3: ask whether VND can be exchanged back into foreign currency

This is where travelers should be careful with assumptions. The direction of the transaction matters. Current State Bank rules for ordinary foreign-currency exchange agents describe those agents as generally buying foreign-currency cash from customers and selling the foreign currency they buy back to the authorizing credit institution. Selling foreign currency to individuals is treated differently and is associated with specific exceptions, including agents in international border-gate isolation areas.

That means a counter that can exchange your USD, EUR or other foreign banknotes into VND should not automatically be assumed to offer the reverse transaction from VND back into USD or another foreign currency.

Airport or departure-area exchange can follow different rules

State Bank publications describe specific rules for exchange agents in international border-gate isolation areas. In those scenarios, passport presentation can be relevant, and certain repurchase transactions can involve a receipt showing an earlier foreign-currency exchange in Vietnam.

Those rules are transaction-specific. Do not assume an airport or departure-area counter will always offer the service, accept any amount or use the same rate as your original exchange. Confirm availability, documentation and the actual quote at the time.

Why your original exchange receipt may matter

A receipt is useful even when you do not know whether you will exchange VND back later. It can document the original transaction, currency, amount and rate. In some specific repurchase scenarios described by State Bank materials, proof of the earlier exchange is part of the documentation framework.

Keep transaction records until your trip is finished rather than discarding them immediately after receiving VND.

Do not expect the reverse rate to match the original rate

If an exchange-back transaction is available, the quote may be different from the original foreign-currency-to-VND exchange. The buy/sell direction changes, and different spreads, fees, transaction limits or availability can apply.

Use the Buy vs Sell Exchange Rates guide to understand why the reverse transaction should not be calculated by simply undoing the first exchange at the same number.

A departure-day decision table

Your situation Practical next step
You have only a modest VND remainder Keep enough for final expenses, then consider using the remainder or keeping it for a future trip.
You have a larger VND balance Ask a bank or appropriate foreign-exchange provider about current exchange-back availability, documentation and the actual quote.
You are already at an international departure area Check whether an authorized counter offers the transaction and what passport or receipt requirements apply.
You no longer have the original exchange receipt Do not assume that a specific repurchase option will still be available; ask the provider what documentation is required.

What about this website’s Phu Quoc service counters?

The service counters published on this website are presented primarily for travelers exchanging accepted foreign banknotes into VND. This article does not claim that those counters buy VND back or sell foreign currency to departing travelers.

If you need a reverse transaction, ask first rather than traveling with a large amount of VND. Use the Contact page or public phone 0788 636 969 to ask what service is currently available. For the separate question of regulatory authorization, see How to Check Whether a Currency Exchange Provider Is Authorized in Vietnam.

Leftover VND FAQ

Can I exchange Vietnamese Dong back to USD in Phu Quoc?

Do not assume every local exchange counter offers that transaction. Ask a bank or appropriate provider about current availability, documentation and the actual quote.

Should I spend all my VND before the airport?

It can. Keep it until departure. Some specific repurchase scenarios described by State Bank materials use prior exchange receipts as part of the documentation.
